A hard day for Queen's Own Rifles regiment
On June 6, 1944, in Normandy, the 8th Brigade of the 3rd Canadian Infantry division lands on Juno Beach. The regiment of Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada undergoes heavy losses in front of Bernières-sur-Mer. A company suffers a dozen losses crossing the beach, but B company has a third of its troop wounded and killed in front of La Cassine strongpoint. At 9 a. m., the Queen’s are joined in Bernières by the French Canadians of regiment La Chaudière. Reinforced by the tanks of Fort Garry Horse, the Queen’s Own Rifles reach Anguerny around 17:30 p. m. and take up defensive position. At the evening of June 6, the 8th Brigade of brigadier Blackader and 9th Brigade units of brigadier Cunningham hold Anguerny and Anisy.
