The British tanks are fired by the German Tigers
On 10 July 1944, Caen is nearly entirely liberated, but the river Orne is not crossed west of the city; this is operation Jupiter objective. The attack starts at 5:00 a. m., the 43rd Wessex division elements advance toward Maltot and are pinned down by the violent German fire. The British assault the town but are then encircled, they must evacuate it with heavy losses, the German Tigers fired the British tanks. Maltot will be taken again on 22 July by the 5th Wilts of the 43rd Division fighting house to house to take the town.

This stele is dedicated to the Dorset regiment who fought fiercely for hill 112, on 23 July 1944.
