A hard day for The
Queen's Own Rifles Regiment
On
June 6, 1944, in Normandy, the 8th Brigade of the 3rd Canadian Infantry
Division landed on Juno Beach. The Queen’s Own Rifles Regiment
of Canada underwent heavy losses in front of Bernières-sur-Mer.
A company suffered a dozen losses crossing the beach, but B company
has a third of its troop wounded and killed in front of La Cassine
strongpoint. At 9 a. m., the Queen’s were joined in Bernières-sur-Mer
by the French Canadians of Regiment de La Chaudière. Reinforced
by the tanks of The Fort Garry Horse, the Queen’s Own Rifles
reached Anguerny around 17:30 p. m. and took up defensive position.
At the evening of June 6, the 8th Brigade of Brigadier Blackader and
units of the 9th Brigade, under Brigadier Cunningham, held Anguerny
and Anisy.
