ANNEBAULT Calvados - 12 km west of Pont-L'Evêque
Coup de main on the river Dives for the Commandos
On 20 August 1944, the 48th Royal Marine Commando seizes hill 120, north of Angerville. The British cross the flooded area of the river Dives, and capture the eastern hills. The Germans are not willing to let the Commandos take over these key positions. In the night of 20 to 21 August, general Reichert, commanding the 711st Infantry Division, orders a counter-attack ; the Germans are driven back and withdraw onto a frontline from Houlgate to Annebault. In the same time, the 4th Special Service Brigade enters in Dozulé, the Germans have set the town on fire before evacuating it. The next 6th Airborne Division objective is Pont-l'Evêque. The 6th Airlanding Armoured Reconnaissance must progress toward Cresseveuille and Annebault. Annebault is liberated in the day of 21 August, by troops of the 8th and 9th Battalion Parachute Regiment of the 3rd Parachute Brigade.
