The great German offensive toward Bayeux
On 7 June 1944, General Fritz Bayerlein arrived on the Normandy front, he commanded the Panzer Lehr-Division. On 9 June, he was ordered to seize back Bayeux and to drive the British back to the sea. The 50th British Infantry Division took on the punch of the German tanks massive attack. The British infantry was overwhelmed, but General Bayerlein was soon given a counter-order, the offensive toward Bayeux was stopped. The Panzer Lehr-Division moved in another departure area, and the assault was renewed. Chouain and Audrieu were captured, but this time, General Graham's tanks stopped on hill 103 the onrush of German panzers. During the night of 9-10 June, the Panzer Lehr-Division broke off and took a layback position. The German's withdrawal left the town clear.

 
     
 
 
 
Royal Winnipeg Rifles monument
This monument is in memory of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles men, who were captured and shot down at Audrieu castle near Mesnil-Patry and at Haut-du-Bosq, on 8, 9 and 11 June 1944.
