AUTHIE Calvados - 2 km west of Caen
Charnwood, the Canadians carried out the assault
On 7 June 1944, Authie had been liberated by the Canadians, but the town had been taken back by grenadiers of the 12nd SS Panzer-Division. The front stabilised during near a month. After the Operation Windsor launched on 4 July 1944, the Allied Forces took control over Carpiquet airfield, General Montgomery renewed with Charnwood on 8 July. He had an enormous force at his disposal. Three infantry divisions were supported by many units : infantry, artillery, 350 tanks and even naval artillery. On 8 July, the North Nova Scotia Highlanders awaited the order to attack in the vicinity of Authie. Whereas they moved along, German shells caused several casualties among the Canadians. Authie was conquered again in the afternoon, at the cost of 160 casualties and seven Sherman destroyed, and in spite of a fanatic resistance of the Hitlerjugend Division grenadiers.
