BARNEVILLE-CARTERET Manche - 2 km east of Carteret
The Americans cut off the Cotentin Peninsula
After the taking of Carentan on 12 June 1944, the Americans of the VIIth Corps, under General Collins, progressed westward and northward. On 15 June, Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte was seized. On 17 June, the 60th Infantry Regiment of the 9th Infantry Division under General Eddy broke through to the west and stopped in the evening, ten kilometers from the coast. On 18 June, at 5 am, an American armoured column – the 3rd Batallion of the 60th Infantry Regiment, tanks of the 746th Tank Battalion and the 899th Tank Destroyer Battalion - entered Barneville. They repulsed some German troops, and formed a hedgehog defense display. During the day, they fought back retreating Germans who tried to cross the town. The Cotentin Peninsula was cut off. Many German units succeeded in crossing, by night, the American faintly defended lines. Nethertheless 3,000 men belonging to the 77th, 91st, 243th and 709th German Infantry Divisions were trapped.
