Trench
warfare for the British Commandos
On 6 June 1944, the Commandos of the 1st Special Service Brigade could
not imagine, when they set foot on the Norman Beach of Ouistreham,
that they would carry out trench warfare as worthy as World War I.
On 17 August, the Commandos were kept in check since nearly three
weeks in the Bois de Bavent sector. The German lines are sometimes
at range of voice and the combatants fought in the no man' s land.
Finally on 17 August, manoeuvre started again when the Allied High
Commandment launches the Operation Paddle. During the night, the Commandos
moved forward, heavy laden with ammunition; in the morning hours the
French of the n°4 Commando entered destroyed Bavent; the town
had just been left by the Germans who were now beginning their retreat
toward the river Seine.
