BÉNY-SUR-MER/BASLY Calvados - 12 km north of Caen
Bény-sur-Mer was liberated by le Régiment de La Chaudière
On 6 June 1944 the Canadians of the Queen’s Own Rifles and Le Régiment de La Chaudière landed in Normandy on Juno Beach. After fierce engagements on the beaches, they broke through and progress inland in the afternoon. Supported by a tank squadron of The Fort Garry Horse, the French Canadians of Le Régiment de La Chaudière liberated Bény-sur-Mer. They moved on and captured Les Moulineaux German strongpoint, a coastal battery fitted with four 105 mm guns, before entering Basly. They reinforced their positions in the evening of 6 June, with the arrival of the Sherbrooke Fusiliers tanks, which had been entangled in jam in Bernières-sur-Mer beach.
