BIEVILLE/PERIERS-SUR-LE-DAN
Calvados
- 3 km and 5 km north from Caen
The
capture of Caen was the main objective on D-day
The 3rd British Infantry Division under general Rennie landed on Sword
beach on 6 June 1944. The 185th Intermediate Brigade unloaded at the
end of the morning, the Brigade's engagement was delayed by jam on
the beach. Then the progression started and the Brigade went past
the 1st South Lancashire positions. The King’s Shropshire Light
Infantry was stopped in front of Beuville by German machine-guns firing.
With reinforcement of the Staffordshire Yeomanry tanks, the KSLI took
the ridge of Périers-sur-le-Dan, while the Royal Norfolk fights
in front of Beuville. In middle afternoon, the Germans counter-attacked;
but the 185th Intermediate Brigade held strongly its position, and
the tanks of the Kampfguppe Von Oppeln of the 21st Panzer-Division
were kept in check in front of Biéville and Périers-sur-le-Dan.
A company of the KSLI crossed Biéville and reached the wood
of Lebisey, but the British could not move forward. On 6 June, Caen
was out of reach.
