BLAINVILLE-SUR-ORNE
Calvados
- 5 km north-east of Caen
The
21st Panzer-Division stopped the Allied Forces
On 6 June 1944, the 3rd British Infantry Division under general Rennie
landed on Sword Beach in the first assault wave. The division was
assigned the task to capture Caen. On 6 June, Hermanville-sur-Mer
and Colleville-sur-Orne were liberated around 9:30 a.m., but the N°4
Commando fought all the morning to neutralize the defenses of Riva
Bella and Ouistreham harbor. The 185th Intermediate Brigade unloaded
at 10:30 a.m.; Brigadier Smith hastened the regrouping of the three
regiments, and started moving toward Caen. In the mid-afternoon, the
185th Intermediate Brigade hit a counter-attack of the 21st Panzer-Division.
The Germans were repelled in front of Biéville by the 1st Battalion
The Royal Norfolk, the 2nd battalion The Warwickshire Regiment settled
in Blainville-sur-Orne. The Brigade strenghtened its positions, but
the Allied Forces lost any hope to capture Caen in the first days
of the Landing.
