The British troops crossed the river Touques
As the battle of the Falaise pocket was coming to an end, the 79th American Infantry Division spanned the river Seine near Mantes on 20 August. The XVth American Army Corps attempted, in the same time, to cut off the Germans retreat route toward the river Seine. The 21st British Army Group was assigned the task to destroy the beleaguered German troops. The Allied Forces fought against the 5th Panzer-Armee, composed of several Army Corps remnants, and of the Ist and the IInd SS Panzer-Korps, evacuated from the Falaise pocket. The Ist British Corps progressed toward Pont-l’Evêque and Pont-Audemer, while the IInd Canadian Corps advanced toward Bernay and Elbeuf on 22 August. On 24 August the British liberated Lisieux et cross the river Touques, Blangy-le-Château and Le Breuil-en-Auge were liberated by the Allied troops.

This plaque commemorates the liberation of Blangy-le-Château canton by the Allied Forces, on 23 and 24 August 1944.
