The Big Red One crossed road N13
On 7 June, 1944, whereas the allied bridgehead was still weak, the
Americans were building the first emergency airfields, the first oil
refuelling ports and the artificial harbour Mulberry A in front of
Vierville-sur-Mer. The Americans moved inland; the Vth Corps set up
an offensive for 9 June. The 1st Infantry Division, commanded by General
Huebner, attacked in order to prepare the start line. Tour-en-Bessin
and Etreham were taken, the Germans retreated through a corridor west
of Bayeux, N13 road from Bayeux to Caen was crossed. On June 9, the
2nd Infantry Division, under General Robertson, came to occupy the
right wing of the Big Red One. The offensive began again and Blay
was liberated in the day of 9 June.
