BREVILLE
Calvados
- 11 km north-west of Caen
The 6th Airborne Division stabilized the front line
On 6 June 1944, the N° 4 Commando landed in Normandy in Ouistreham;
the Commandos made junction with the 6th Airborne Division parachutists.
The positions were strengthened west of the river Orne the following
day. On 7 June, General gale launched several attacks, one southward
along the river Orne, another toward Escoville. On 8 June, the 1st
Canadian Parachute Battalion stopped a counter-attack of the 711st
German Infantry Division. On 10 June, the Germans pushed from Bréville,
a salient in the 6th Airborne Division lines. The reinforcement of
three Battalions of the 51st Infantry Division, and the 6th Airlanding
Brigade, enabled to stabilize the sector. In the night of 12 June,
the 12th battalion Parachute Regiment and the 12th Battalion Devonshire
Regiment assaulted Breville. German resistance was furious, and the
British suffered heavy losses to drive them back out of the town on
13 June.
