BRIOUZE Orne - 17 km east of Flers
The IInd SS Panzer-Korps moved west of the river Orne
On 16 August 1944, after General Hausser, Commander of the 7th German Army, and General Eberbach, Commander of Panzergruppe West had sent alarming messages, Hitler authorized the 7th Army withdrawal. But this late decision could not change the inevitable outcome of the battle. On the southern front of the Falaise pocket, the Americans of the 3rd Army were at the gate of Argentan and cut off RN 24 bis. The 1st American Army emerged from Domfront and Bagnoles-de-l’Orne. The 9th Infantry Division of General Eddy was nearly reaching Briouze. Facing the Americans, the 10th SS Panzer-Division was relieved by Wehrmacht troops. In the morning of 16 August the manoeuvre was completed in some confusion, the Commander of the Frunsberg Division had to bypass Briouze, where the Americans were just entering. The 9th Infantry Division liberated the city, after having pushed back a rearguard of the 9th SS Hohenstaufen Panzer-Division.
