The Régiment de Maisonneuve facing the SS Tiger tanks
Mid-August
1944, in Normandy, the Allied Forces encountered difficulty in their
progression toward falaise. General Montgomery carried out the Offensive
Tractable expected to be launch on 14 August. On the right flank,
the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division had attacked in Tournebu area the
day before on 13 August. The Canadians succeeded in establishing a
bridgehead across the river Laize. But when Le Régiment de
Maisonneuve soldiers moved forward, the advance broke against German
strong defenses established in the heights. On 14 August, the Operation
Tractable began, the Germans got the map of the operation on the corpse
of a Canadian officer. The 2nd Canadian Infantry Division soldiers
started again progression toward Falaise. The German infantry and
the SS Panzer-Abteilung 102 Tigers counter-attacked inflict heavy
losses to the Canadians. The hamlet of Clair Tison was nearly completely
ruined. On 16 August in the evening, the Allied Forces were at the
gate of Falaise.
