COLOMBY/HEMEVEZ
Manche
- 5 km south of Valognes
Offensive westward, offensive northward
One
week after the Landing on Utah Beach, on 6 June 1944, the VIIth Corps
under General Collins attempted to widen the bridgehead. But several
strong points slowed down the advance of the American troops in the
Cotentin. The battery of Saint-Marcouf was captured on 12 June, after
the withdrawal of the German gunners. The fortified hamlet of Quinéville
on the coast was seized on 14 June, but Montebourg sealed off the
road to Cherbourg. On 15 June, General Collins ordered a movement
westward to cut off the Cotentin peninsula. The 90th Infantry Division
had been put in a layback position on 13 June, after heavy human losses
in front of Pont-l’Abbé; the division was reorganized
and put into action again. On 16 June, the 90th Infantry Division
reached the vicinity of Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte, the city was liberated
by the parachutists of the 82nd Airborne Division. On 17 June, the
infantry of the 90th Division liberated Colomby and Hemevez in their
advance.
