CONDE-SUR-VIRE Manche - 10 km south of Saint-Lô
The German front line was dismantled
The massive blow of the Operation Cobra, prepared by General Bradley was a full success. On 26 July, the German lines were pulverized west of Saint-Lô under 3300 tonnes of bombs. General Collins poured his armoured divisions in the breach. In a wide manoeuvre toward the coast, the Americans rushed on to encircle as much as possible German troops who retreated southward, toward Coutances. East of Saint-Lô , the Vth American Corps progressed. The paratroopers under General Meindl have to withdrew, they let the 2nd Infantry Division enter Saint-Jean-des-Baisants on 28 July. The 30th Infantry Division and the 2nd Armoured Division moved on to the south, along the west bank of the river Vire. The Combat Command A of the 2nd Armoured Division reached Villebaudon, twenty kilometers south of Saint-Lô. Condé-sur-Vire was liberated on 29 July by the 35th Infantry Division 134th Regiment.
