CUVERVILLE Calvados 5 km east of Caen
Dissension within the SHAEF
At the beginning of July 1944, the allied advance was behind schedule, the northern sector of Caen city had been just liberated on 9 -10 July. The allied losses were heavy, and the progression was slow in the British sector. The relations were strained in the Supreme Headquarter of Allied Expeditionary Force, criticisms arose against General Montgomery. Also, when he announced to General Eisenhower the two offensives of both the 1st British Army and the 2nd American Army, the hope of a breakthrough strongly rose again. For the Offensive Goodwood, General Montgomery exceptionally obtained support of the heavy bombers of the 8th US Air Force commanded by General Spaatz. On 18 July at 7 am, Airforce stormed the area of Cuverville-Démouville, then artillery opened fire. Tanks of the 29th Brigade of the 11th Armoured Division under Major General Roberts clanked their way. The first German defensive line is held by infantrymen of the 16th Luftwaffe Feld-Division, and was annihilated. Cuverville was quickly liberated around 8:30 am by the 2nd Northamptonshire Yeomanry.
