The Panzer-Lehr Division threatened Bayeux

Bayeux was the first important Norman city liberated by the Allied Forces on 7 June 1944. The XXXth British Corps continued its progression, and came within twenty kilometers of Caen in the evening of 7 June. The 50th Northumbrian Infantry Division entered Martragny and crossed the main road Caen-Bayeux. The 69th Brigade moved to Ducy-Sainte-Marguerite and reached the railway Caen-Cherbourg. The 8th Brigade was stopped south of Audrieu. On 9 June, the Panzer-Lehr Division, strong with 180 tanks, launched a powerful attack on Bayeux. General Bayerlein was assigned the task to recapture the city. The British are driven back, but after a counter-order the German offensive draw on another direction. Audrieu and Chouain were taken again by the Germans, Ducy-Sainte-Marguerite was threatened. General Graham carried out a counter-attack with the 8th Armoured Brigade, and defeated the Germans at Hill 103.The Germans had failed to drive back the Allied forces to the sea in the beginning of the Landing. The Panzer-Lehr Division turned back and set up a solid resistance line around Tilly-sur-Seulles for a long time.
