ETREHAM/TOUR-EN-BESSIN Calvados - 8 km north-west of Bayeux
The Big red one broke through on Omaha Beach
After the tragic landing on Omaha Beach on 6 June 1944, the Americans broke through the German defenses and progressed inland. On 8 June, the 18th Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division started from Colleville-sur-Mer, they reached the RN 13 and took Mosles. A battalion captured Tour-en-Bessin at midday, whereas the advance was blocked by the Germans in front of Etreham. The Allied battleships anchored close to the coast shelled all the villages where enemy concentration was observed, and Etreham received heavy fire from the Baldwin. In the evening, the troops of the 352nd German Infantry Division commanded by General Kraiss withdrew. On 9 June in the morning, there was no more resistance north of the RN 13; the Big Red One entered Etreham and made 600 prisoners.
