ETERVILLE Calvados - 3 km south of Caen
Hill 112, the lock of the front line south west of Caen
At the beginning of July 1944, after a raging battle the Canadians had conquered the plateau and the airfield of Carpiquet. From this strong departure base, General O’Connor ordered the VIIIth Corps to attack the key objective that lock up the front line south west of Caen : hill 112. The Operation Jupiter starts on 10 July. The engagement was furious on hill 112, as the 4th Battalion Dorsetshire Regiment progressed toward Eterville with support of tanks. The town was hardly seized that a heavy artillery and mortar shelling fell on the British; the situation became tragic. The 4th Battalion Dorsetshire Regiment was relieved by the 9th Battalion Cameronians in the afternoon. At dawn of 11 July, a counter-attack of the Panzer-grenadiere 20 and 22 Regiments expelled the British troops from Eterville. But in the course of the day, British artillery stormed the Germans who withdrew from the Norman town in ruins.
