Flers was located on the Vire-Argentan axis. Directed west to the east, the RN 24 bis was a vital road for the Germans. On 12 August, the 3rd Army, under General Patton, reached the vicinity of Argentan, 45 km east of Flers. On 15 August, British, Canadian and Polish troops were at the gate of falaise with the Operation Tractable . On 16 August, the Allied headed toward Flers. The 3rd British Infantry Division came from the west, but the objective was in the 11th British Armoured Division sector. Elements of the 3rd Reconnaissance Regiment of the 3rd British Infantry Division poured into the city heart. The armoured vehicles of the 2nd Northamptonshire Yeomanry encountered the 3rd Reconnaissance Regiment, and "drove" them back outside the city. Flers and Saint-Georges-de-Groseillers were liberated. On 17 August, the 11th Armoured Division crossed Aubusson.
