Junction of Gold Beach and Juno Beach in Creully
On
6 June 1944 at midnight, the 7th Brigade of the 3rd Canadian Infantry
Division cleared off its landing zone on Juno beach. The three regiments
moved inland. The 1st Battalion The Canadian Scottish Regiment advanced
toward Sainte-Croix-sur-Mer, then Creully and Colombiers-sur-Seulles.
The Royal Winnipeg Rifles reached Pierrepont and made the junction
with the British of the 7th Green Howard near Creully. The Regina
Rifle Regiment, under Lieutenant-colonel Matheson, liberated Reviers.
A Sherman squadron of the First Hussars fought in a sharp engagement
against a German 88 mm gun, ambushed on a hill in front of Le Fresne
and Camilly, six Canadian tanks were left on the spot. In the afternoon
the Reginas liberated Le Fresne, Camilly and Fontaine Henri. In the
evening of 6 June, the 7th Brigade strengthened its position in Creully,
Fontaine-Henri, Le Fresne and Camilly area.

Monument dedicated
to soldiers of The Royal Winnipeg Rifles and the 1st Battalion The
Canadian Scottish of the 7th Infantry Brigade, who liberated the town.
A plaque remembers that allied airfield B5 had been set up in the
area, and had been used by the 121st Wing Fighter until 4 September
1944.
