The French Sherman were ambushed by the Germans
The 2nd Armoured Division under General Leclerc reached Le Mans on
10 August 1944. The XVth Corps commanded by General Haislip came up
toward Alençon and Argentan, to make junction with the Canadians
on the offensive south of Caen. On 11 August, Commandant Farret's
unit progressed in two columns, the first one followed the N138 main
road. The second column progressed through secondary roads. At Piacé
crossroads, it turned to the west toward Fresnay-sur-Sarthe, then
came up northward parallel with the main road. After a few kilometers
it was engaged at the croosroads of N805 main road near a farm, a
german anti-tank gun was destroyed. Meanwhile the first column was
ambushed, the 9th Panzer-Division fired six French tanks and killed
seventeen soldiers. A reconnaissance moved south-west toward Fresnay-sur-Sarthe
and routed German infantry. The column drove on northward through
Saint Ouen-de-Mimbré. In the afternoon a patrol of the 1er
Régiment de marche de Spahis marocains entered Fyé.
The French intercepted a Panther and German grenadiere, a French armoured
car is blown up. In the end of the afternoon the French had repelled
the Germans and hold the town.
