The SS troops fought fiercely to move out of the pocket On
August 1944, the 7th German Army was being encircled. The Germans
had had a hard defensive battle on the flanks of the pocket to enable
maximum of troops and vehicles to evacuate it. They used every natural
obstacles to delay the Allied Forces progression like the river Orne.
They destroyed the bridges when all the German troops have crossed.
The remnants of the 10th SS Panzer-Division put this strategy into
practice, as they crossed the river at night. In the morning of 18
August, they moved toward Habloville; each hour and day gained represented
more soldiers and vehicles escaping from the encirclement. The following
day, at the end of the morning, Habloville was liberated as the Germans
went on retreating.
