HUISNES-SUR-MER Manche - 5 km east of Mont-Saint-Michel
General Patton's 3rd Army poured into the breakthrough
West of the Normandy front, the breakthrough was gained by the Allied Forces with the Operation Cobra, launched on 25 July 1944. On 31 July, the Americans entered Avranches, General Wood who commands the 4th Armoured Division called to General Patton and announced him that the bridge in Pontaubault was intact. General Patton understood that seizing this bridge was essential for the success. If the Allied Forces could exit from the Normandy brigehead, a great step toward the victory would be made in the Campaign of France. Patton established at once the operation for exploiting the Breakthrough. His divisions poured into the breakthrough toward Brittany. The 79th Infantry Division reached the Mont-Saint-Michel on 1st August, and liberated Huisnes-sur-Mer in the progression.
