JULLOUVILLE
Manche
- 8 km south of Granville
The 7th German Army’s commander escaped the trap
After the Operation Cobra success at the end of July 1944, the Americans
progressed quickly on a front about fifteen kilometres wide. On 30
July in the evening, the 3rd Armoured Division moved in the vicinity
of Villedieu-les-Poëles and crossed the river Sienne at Gavray.
To the east, the 4th Armoured Division nearly captured the 7th German
Army’s Commander, General Hausser escaped and broke through
the American lines before the pocket of Roncey was sealed. The Americans
took 7000 German soldiers prisoners. The 4th Armoured Division spearhead
reached Avranches. The 6th Armoured Division commanded by General
Gerow moved along the coast and entered Granville on 31 july. In the
meantime, the Americans drove in Avranches evacuated by the Germans
troops, and the 6th Armoured Division liberated Jullouville.
