LA
CHAPELLE-EN-JUGER Manche
- 10 km west of Saint-Lô
Was the German front line pierced west of Saint-Lô? On
25 July 1944 in Normandy, a massive air raid hit a seven kilometres
wide area between Saint-Lô and Périers. General Bradley
wanted to dismantle the German front line with the Operation Cobra,
and carried on a wide manoeuvre. La Chapelle-en-Juger was under the
carpet bombing. As soon as the bombers had moved away, the infantry
sprang and started the attack. The 8th Regiment of the 4th American
Infantry Division under General Barton progressed fast, the first
German lines had collapsed. In the evening, the 1st Battalion reached
the vicinity of La Chapelle-en-Juger. The 2nd Battalion was delayed
by a mixed group of German grenadiere and panzers; with tanks support
the Americans eliminated the obstacle and made junction with the 1st
Battalion near La Chapelle-en-Juger. The ruined village was liberated
the next morning. In the day, General Hausser assigned the task to
a regiment of the 275th Infantry Division to take back the town, but
the German attempt was stopped dead by the fighter bombers.
