L’AIGLE Orne
The Germans onrushed to cross the river Seine
At the end of August 1944, the battle of the Falaise pocket was coming to an end, the Germans Forces retreated toward the river Seine. Whereas on 21 August the German panzers still counter-attacked to keep an exit open in Vimoutiers area, a spearhead of the XVth American Corps had crossed the river Seine the day before at Mantes. The 11st Armoured Division of the XXXth Corps under General Horrocks liberated Flers on 17 August, and moved westward. The Bull Division commanded by General Roberts crossed Putanges, Gacé and entered l’Aigle on 23rd August. It is a race against time, and in spite of a total control of the air, and the near complete destruction of the bridges on the river Seine, the Germans made crossing to 165 000 men and 25 000 vehicles from 26 to 29 August.
