LASSON/ROSEL/CAIRON
Calvados
- 10 km north-west of Caen
The British Commandos pushed back the SS German grenadiere
The
battle raged during several days in early June 1944 west of Caen.
The Canadians of the 3rd Infantry Division were facing the 12th SS
Hitlerjugend Panzer-Division grenadiere, who had arrived few days
ago in Normandy. The Allied Forces did not succeed in taking Caen
in frontal assault, and thus carried out flank attacks. On 11 June,
the Anglo-Canadians launched an offensive which purpose was to occupy
the Mue valley. The Germans used this wooded valley, where flowed
the river Mue, to penetrate the Canadian defenses. All the day, the
46th Royal Marine Commando supported by the Fort Garry Horse tanks
fought against the panzer and the SS grenadiere. In the evening the
Commandos held firmly Rots, liberating Cairon, Lasson and Rosel in
the progression.
