LE CARREFOUR/CARTIGNY-L'EPINAY
Calvados - 25 km west of Bayeux

A tragic setback for the 2nd Battalion
Three days after the Landing, the Americans did not make the junction between Omaha Beach and Utah Beach. The progression southward was slow, the Germans had destroyed the bridges passing through the marshes of the Aure. On 9 June, the 115th Regimental Combat Team asked support of engineer troops to span the swamp. The Americans reached Colombières and Bricqueville, the 2nd Battalion fought in Vouilly and pushed forward. In the night, Lieutenant-colonel Warfield and his combat unit took the wrong road, the timetable is completely upset but they finally reached their destination in the darkness : Le Carrefour. The Americans were exhausted, an armoured German column in retreat hit them as they began to set up. In some chaos the Americans suffered heavy losses, and Lieutenant-colonel Warfield was killed. The next day on 10 June, the combat unit was up to strength with a new commander and replacements, and progression southwards started again.
