LE VAST Manche - 6 km north-west of Quettehou
The 4th "Ivy" Division spanned the river Saire

When the VIIth American Corps commanded by General Collins reached the Cotentin peninsula west coast, the German forces beleaguered in the north were doomed to defeat. The order to retreat is given on 17 June but in Montebourg the Germans held the ground until 19 June. Then the Americans pushed on with three infantry divisions progressing side by side : the 9th, 79th and 4th Infantry Divisions. On the east flank on 20 June the 4th Infantry Division under General Barton reached the river Saire in Renievast, and carried out reconnaissance to Quettehou. The Germans evacuated all their troops and withdrew into the fortified area of Cherbourg harbour. On 21 June the 24th Cavalry Squadron entered Quettehou and Barfleur. The 4th Infantry Division spanned the river Saire, the Americans liberated Le Vast and reached GC 10 road linking Cherbourg with Saint Pierre Eglise.
