LINGEVRES
Calvados
- 15 km south of Bayeux
A victory on the battlefield for the British Sherman
South
of Bayeux, the XXXth British Corps met with strong resistance of the
Panzer-Lehr Division near Tilly-sur-Seulles. On 12 June in Villers-Bocage
the 7th Armoured Division failed to bypass the main German defence
line, General Horrocks ordered a frontal assault. On 14 June, the
50th Infantry Division started the attack. After a heavy preliminary
artillery bombing, the 151st Brigade progressed toward Lingèvres.
The British entered the town, but the German Panzers counter-attacked
the 4/7th Royal Dragoon Guards Sherman. The Sherman Firefly overcame
the Panther, six German Panzers were blown up in Lingèvres,
five had been destroyed by the same Sherman. At the end of the day
another German assault was blocked by artillery, the 1st Battalion
Dorsetshire Regiment held strongly Lingèvres.
