The French Canadians liberated Louvigny
On
9 July 1944, the British entered Caen and liberated the large Norman
city. On 16 July, in the advanced Headquarter of the IInd Canadian
Corps at Rosel, General Simonds exposed to his battalion commanders
the objectives of the Operation Atlantic. The 2nd infantry
Division must exploit the breakthrough southward, and the 4th Brigade
was assigned the task to take Louvigny. On 18 July the Royal Regiment
of Canada approached Louvigny. The Germans placed a heavy artillery
concentration on the area, the Canadians striked back with a deluge
of shells. The SS troops of the 1st Panzer-Division had set up their
headquarters in the cemetery. On 19 July in the evening the Canadians
renewed the sassault and took the town. They pushed back the SS from
the cemetery and the castle of Louvigny.
