The Germans held the ground Maupertus
airfield
The VIIth Corps under General Collins attained the perimeter of Cherbourg
fortifications on 21 June 1944. General von Schlieben commanding the
fortress did not answer to the American ultimatum. The assault started
on. General Barton's 4th Infantry Division reached hill 158 situated
south-west of Maupertus airfield, with support of the 70th Tank Battalion
and fighting bombers. But German troops of the Rohrbach's Kampfgruppe
counter-attacked and beleaguered the 22nd Infantry Regiment. On 23
June the 12nd Infantry Regiment repelled German thrusts in the airfield
area. On 24 the Americans seized positions of Digosville and entered
Tourlaville. On 26 General von Schlieben surrendered with several
hundreds soldiers. Colonel Foster's 22nd Infantry Regiment advanced
toward Osteck strongpopint, the 1st Battalion captured Gonneville
and south of Maupertus airfield, while the 2nd Battalion liberated
the town of Maupertus, but heavy artillery fire from the airfield
stopped again the Americans. Finally on 27 June Germain stiff resistance
was overcomed and Maupertus airfield was taken.
Stèle aérodrome A 15 et 9th US Air Force
Cette stèle commémore l'emplacement de l'aérodrome
américain A 15, installé à cet endroit
en juillet 1944, et d'où décollèrent les
escadrilles de la 9th US Air Force. Il fut construit par les
850th et 877th Air Engineers Battalions. Sur les côtés
de la stèle sont inscrits tous les aérodromes,
de A 1 à A 26, établis par les Américains,
en Normandie.
