MONTEBOURG
Manche
- 7 km south-east of Valognes
The last gate to Cherbourg harbor was cracked open
One
week after the Landing on 6 June 1944 the VIIth Corps under General
Collins went up the Cotentin peninsula. On 12 June, the Americans
captured the battery of Saint-Marcouf evacuated by the German gunners,
then they seized Ozeville. On the coast Quineville fell on 14 June,
whereas on the west Montebourg formed a salient in the American front
line. The city was heavily shelled by the Air Force and the Navy.
Lieutenant-colonel Keil attempted to reorganize his defense display
with mixed troops. On 19 June, the Cotentin peninsula had been cut
off from the continent by the Americans, and the 4th Infantry Division
under General Barton attacked towards Montebourg. At midday Lieutenant-colonel
Keil was given his Kampfgruppe a withdrawal order; the falling rain
made easier the German movement. On 20 June the following day, the
Americans entered Montebourg, cleared of enemy.
