MOUEN Calvados - 4 km west of Caen
The Operation Epsom : 60 000 Allied soldiers attacked
On 26 June 1944 the Operation Epsom launched 60 000 Allied soldiers to the assault west of Caen. The first German lines were driven from the field, but the German Armoured Corps striked against the flanks of the offensive. On 28 June a regiment of the 21st Panzer-Division pushed on the east flank, British soldiers of the 159th Brigade were encircled in Mouen. The same day the death of General Dollmann Commander in Chief of the 7th German Army caused some chaos in the High Commandment. The following day the British VIIIth Corps carried on the offensive, the 43rd Infantry Division Wessex took back Mouen to the young SS soldiers of the Hitlerjugend Division with support of the Air force. Meanwhile, a powerful assault of the IInd SS Panzer-Korps was kept in check on the western flank.

 
     
   
 

Major Legrand monument
Monument dedicated to Major Louis Henri Legrand. This Belgian officer was seconded to the 23rd Hussars of the 29th Armoured Brigade ; he was killed on 27 June 1944 in a Sherman tank with all the British crew.
Situation : east of the town, at the edge of the D89 road
