The decisive drive on Cherbourg
The Cotentin peninsula was cut off on 18 June 1944, the VIIth Corps
under General Collins turned next in the direction of the main purpose
: Cherbourg. The offensive started on 19 June. The 79th Infantry Division
commanded by General Wyche launched the attack west of Valognes, from
the area between Golleville to Urville. The 313rd Infantry Regiment
crossed the road Valognes-Bricquebec, and settled down in the little
wood of La Brique west of Valognes. General Eddy's 9th Infantry Division
progressed without any opposition worth mentioning; the 2nd Battalion
of the 39th Infantry Regiment entered Bricquebec, cleared of German
troops. The 4th Cavalry Squadron was engaged with the 9th and 7th
infantry Divisions on the flanks. Troops A and C's line of departure
was Néhou toward Négreville, while Troops E and F started
from Blandamour toward Rocheville. The Americans encountered weak
resistance and reached all their objectives in the afternoon; Négreville
was liberated.
