The 29th Infantry Division by the rivers Elle and Vire
At D-day + 3 the joining was not completed between Utah and Omaha
landing beaches. Carentan was defended by Germans of the 6th Parachutist
Regiment under Colonel von der Heydte. On 9 June General Gerow commanding
the Vth American Corps expanded Omaha Beach bridgehead. The 29th Infantry
Division commanded by General Gerhardt spanned the marshes of the
Aure southward, and pushed back the remnants of several German units.
On 10 June to the west, Isigny-sur-mer was liberated by infantry of
the 175th Regiment and tanks of the 747th Tank Battalion. To the south
the Americans formed a defensive line on the river Elle with the 115th
Regimental Combat Team. To the west the 175th Regimental Combat Team
assembled east of the river Vire, from Isigny-sur-Mer to La Fotelaie.
Neuilly-la-Forêt was liberated but stayed on the front line.
474th Fighter Group and 38th Signal Battalion

second plaque is in memory of the 38th Signal Battalion (July
1944).
