PERIERS/MILLIERES Manche - 26 and 28 km west of Saint-Lô
The Germans escaped during the night

The Operation Cobra had began on 25 July 1944, the first German lines west of Saint-Lô had been dismantled. On 26 June the Americans attacked on the front of the VIIIth Army Corps from Périers to Lessay. General Middleton's objective was to attract German forces while the breakthrough was on the way. Facing to Périers the soldiers of the 90th Infantry Division met with surprising agression from the Germans, the progression is not significant. The following day the assault was renewed after a preliminary artillery bombing preparation. The Americans found out that the enemy had left its positions; the SS of the 2nd Panzer-Division Das reich and the parachutists of the 6th Regiment had withdrawn during the night. The 359th Regiment of the 90th Infantry Division under General Landrum entered ruined Périers on 27 July. Millières was liberated by the 8th Infantry division commanded by General Stroh.
