The XLVIIth Panzer-Korps
was withdrawn for the Operation Lûttich
By end of July 1944, the push of the Operation Cobra resulted in the
collapse of the German front line west of Saint-Lô. The first
units of the 2nd Panzer-Division were committed in the area of Tessy-sur-Vire
on 28 July, and they immediately carried out a counter-attack. Facing
the British the 116th Panzer-Division attempted in vain to take back
Mont Robin north of Percy. East of the river Vire the IInd German
Parachutist Corps withdrew, and the 35th American Infantry Division
entered Torigni-sur-Vire on 31. Facing the XIXth and Vth American
Corps the XLVIIth Panzer-Korps began to retreat, since armoured units
were needed for the Operation Lüttich. The 30th Infantry Division
seized Troisgots seven kilometers north of Tessy-sur-Vire, where the
2nd Panzer-Division and the remnants of the 352nd Infantry Division
resisted to the bitter end. The Americans entered Tessy-sur-Vire on
2 August in the morning. The XLVIIth Panzer-Korps withdrew through
Pont-Farcy liberated on 3 August by the 35th Infantry Division.
