QUINEVILLE
Manche - 15 km east of Valognes
The 4th Infantry Division met with strong opposition
in the progression
The Germans failed to drive the Allied back to sea in the early days
of D-day. But the invading forces needed a large area, because troops
and supplies were continually pouring on the beaches. In Cotentin
Peninsula, the Americans had to seize a strategic harbor, and Cherbourg
became the main objective on 9 June. The Americans launched offensives
northward, Montebourg was the key strongpoint of German front line.
Along the Channel coast, General Barton’s 4th Infantry Division
met serious resistance in the flooded fields. South of Quinéville
the Americans are hindered by a solid obstacle : the coastal battery
of Crisbecq, near Saint-Marcouf; it sank several American ships before
being evacuated. Quinéville, an important German sector Headquarters,
is liberated on 14 July by the 39th Regiment of the 9th Infantry Division,
subordinated to the 4th Division.

Mémorial de la Liberté retrouvée
Le musée retrace la vie quotidienne des Français
sous l’occupation jusqu’à la Libération.
La rue d’un village français sous l’occupation
est reconstituée à l’échelle 1, décors
et mannequins restituent l’atmosphère dramatique
de l’époque. Un blockhaus du Mur de l'Atlantique
est intégré au Mémorial; et un film sur
la libération du Cotentin est diffusé en complément.

Stèle 9e Division d'infanterie
Cette
stèle est à la mémoire des soldats du 39e Régiment
d'infanterie de la 9e Division d'infanterie américaine, commandée
par le général Manton S. Eddy, qui libéra la
ville le 14 juin 1944.

Panneau Commando français
Ce
panneau rappelle l'opération spéciale menée,
dans la nuit du 26 au 27 décembre 1943, par un commando français.
Cette opération de renseignement contribua au succès
du débarquement à Utah beach le 6 juin 1944.
