Germans withdrew toward Cherbourg fortress

The Germans held their position during one week in the sector of Montebourg. On 17 June they started withdrawing, the cut of the Cotentin peninsula by the Americans could not be prevented. Several German divisions units were split up by the American breakthrough; some units retreated towards the fortress of Cherbourg, whereas the others escaped towards the south. In the north, the Germans reorganized a temporary defense display on the axis Valognes-Quettehou. From 18 to 19 June, all the positions were evacuated in the east of the Saire valley : the Luftwaffe signal station of Teurtheville-Bocage, and the batteries of Gatteville and La Pernelle, whose heavy guns were put out of order. All German forces regrouped in the area of Cherbourg fortress. Réville was liberated on 20 June by the Americans of the 4th Infantry Division.
