SERVON Manche - 16 km south of Avranches
The 3rd American Army came out from the Cotentin

On 1st August 1944 it was a Colonel’s heavy responsibility to prevent the Americans of emerging from the Cotentin peninsula after the capture of Avranches. Colonel Bacherer’s "kampfgruppe" arrived in the outskirts of the city, but the taskforce was not strong enough facing General Patton’s 3rd American Army. The Germans renewed their assaults to destroy the bridge of Pontaubault without any success. This intact bridge enabled General Patton’s Army to fan into Brittany. During several days, night and day, tanks, vehicles and troops crossed the bridge of Pontaubault over the river Sélune, a second bridge was built by the engineers. Toward the west and Mont-Saint-Michel General Patton launched the 79th Infantry Division, the 6th Armoured Division rushed on toward Brest by the road N176, the Americans liberated Servon in their progression.
