TANVILLE
Orne - 12 km west of Sées
The
9th Panzer-Division was trapped in Ecouves forest
On Saturday 12 August 1944 the 2nd Armoured Division liberated Alençon
without fight. The French under General Leclerc moved northward. They
had to cross Ecouves forest, and General Leclerc knew the 9th Panzer-Division
was waiting ambushed. The Squadron Warabiot bypassed the obstacle
by the east and entered Sées. But the French hit vehicles of
the 5th American Armoured Division, it caused a jam
and a serious incident. In mid-afternoon the spahis reached Cercueil
crossroads, also named Point du jour crossroads, two kilometers north-east
of Tanville. At 5 p. m. General Leclerc set up his headquarter near
the crossroads. On 13 August a squadron of tank destroyers of the
2nd Armoured Division liberated Tanville. The French had to stay with
eyes wide open, because Ecouves forest was full of German soldiers
trying to break through their lines.
