TOURNIERES/SAINT-MARTIN-DE-BLAGNY
Calvados - 20 km west of Bayeux

The German front line was dismantled behind Omaha Beach

On 10 June 1944 the Americans had landed four days before and strenghtened the bridgehead. In the area of Omaha Beach they crossed the marshes of Aure, the German front was collapsing. General Kraiss Commander of the 352th German Infantry division tried to build up a new defence display with the remains of his troops. The 2nd American Infantry Division under General Robertson moved southward and liberated Saint-Martin de Blagny. The 38th Regimental Combat Team came from Trévières, crossed Tournières and reached Cerisy-la-Forêt. The 352th German Infantry division was destroyed. There was no longer front line opposite the Americans of the 2nd Infantry Division. But a counter-attack of the Panzer-Lehr Division toward Bayeux, and the arrival of vanguard units of the 17th SS-Panzer-Division slowed down the progression of the Americans.
